Cheltenham Science Festival, 4-8 June 2008
Find out about physics and more at this year’s Cheltenham Science Festival. Surf the Solar System with Lucy Hawking (daughter of Stephen), join the debate on science and religion with Richard Dawkins and Jim Al-Khalili, and discover what Quantum Dots can do for you
The Cheltenham Science Festival is a five-day celebration of science, engineering and the arts. A rare opportunity for the public to come face-to-face with the world’s leading scientists and thinkers, it annually brings together a record 26,000 members of the public and over 300 speakers to discuss, celebrate and argue about science.
The interactive hands-on Discover Zone attracts over 10,000 visitors and the programme has nearly 120 events, talks and workshops. In 2007, the schools’ events attracted 3,500 school children.
Among the big names in science taking part in the Festival are Richard Dawkins, Jim Al-Khalili, Steven Pinker, Robert Winston, Colin Blakemore, John Beddington, David King and Martin Rees. They will be joined by the philosopher A C Grayling and Time Team’s Tony Robinson.
Over the past six years the festival has become a unique event – arguably the best in the world – which is now copied across the globe and which is starting to make a real difference to the public’s perception of scientists and their work, helping to encourage a new generation of scientists and engineers.
During the festival there are several events that focus on exciting aspects of physics:
The Power of Fusion (4 June)
Quantum Dots (4 June)
Arabic Science with Jim Al-Khalili (5 June)
Light Fantastic – family event (7 June)
